desktop icons on FC5 not anymore visible :-(

hello

The desktop icons (exept "computer", "home" and "trash") are not anymore 
visible :-(
all have "herited" a default icon. Even trying to manually change it is 
not possible
going in properties of the icon, trying to select file from 
/usr/share/pixmaps/* doesn't even show .jpg, png etc ... files which are 
there :-(
Only when logged as root then everything works fine !
Any idea of what is wong ? how to debug ? is this a gnome or nautilus pb ?
