XML files under ~/.nautilus/metafiles

Hi everybody!
I would like to know when the XML files kept in ~/.nautilus/metafiles
are updated and/or read by Nautilus.
I'm trying to set emblems by scripts on certain files/directories,
and I think the only technique to do that
is to modify those XML files.
If there is a better technique, please help
