It does indeed pass your username. And if your happen to have a 1:1 username
correspondence on the remote system and a blank password, then you're 
authenticated.

(this limitation is very troublesome when working with an NT-based server--
in the absence of a domain controller, they seem to use something similar
to Samba's User authentication mode. You can't even get a list of shares
without the above conditions)
