Hi, I hope I'm not too much of a bother if I weigh in with my thoughts.
Normally I've have lurked more first before making a first post, but the
spatial Nautilus is something near and dear to me.
I'm not sure that the proposed patch would be correctly interpreted as
changing the behavior of the properties dialog. In fact, quite the opposite:
it's actually ensuring (internally) consistent behavior.
It's not so much that the properties is an action on a selection, but rather
the object. An open window represents a folder object, just in a different
state (hence, your implementing the firm one-to-one relationship between the
icon and the window).
The clearest example would be a right-click on the background of the window:
what was selected? The folder, but in window state. Following this, the
Ctrl+I action on a window with nothing selected should get information for
the window (open folder) itself. And by extension, the File menu item would
mean the same thing: the (window) folder object or the (selected)
file/folder object.
I, for one, like the direction that Nautilus has been heading. I think that
this patch could help those who want to work within the object model, but
still need intelligent shortcuts (e.g. properties on current folder without
having to open the parent).
