Re: RE : new mime detection approach

I've applied the patches you attached to your mail to my current gnome-vfs and nautilus 2.4.1. I've noticed a significant speed-up when loading directories. There is still a long delay before parsing on very large directories (over 1000 items) but it's much less long than before. Maybe you have nautilus-thumbnailers installed : I had them removed because it's painfully slow, as slow as are some thumbnailing actions of Totem (those can be disabled with gconf). There is still problems on remote ftp sites with lots of items but some of them may have been fixed in 2.4.2.

There are big issues with .desktop files :
- they are not recognized, : they are displayed without their icon and correct name (displayed as a geglxxxx.desktop...; eekxxxx.desktop...) and I've got the nautilus "choose an action for that file, please..." dialog (and the first time, it appears several seconds after I ear the little gnome sound played to inform the user that a dialog should appear). Desktop files are recognized if I change their name in the Information window or with the launcher editor dialog. But then, if I kill an restart nautilus, there are not recognized again. Nautilus sniffs them only if I remove the .desktop extension via a terminal. But then, I can't edit them anymore via the ->edit launcher entry of the desktop menu. The entry is there, but it doesn't do anything.

The other mime-action seems to work well.

Can't help more than this.

Great !
Any chance to see this back-ported to nautilus-2.4 or to download the patches somewhere ?

I back ported the patch, but found no effect. Maybe something were wrong :-(

Could you please help me check these patches?
