icon placement on desktop

hi all,

I have some icons on my desktop mac style (to the right) as opposed to
windows style (on the left).  Also, things I download go straight to my
desktop.  The problem is that when I download things, they go straight
to the top left of the screen.  Is there a way to tell nautilus all my
icons should go on the right?  further, when I click 'clean up by name'
it moves everything to the left.  it appears that there is only one
default icon placement.
