It can be used to make open folders easier to distinguish. For
example, you won't
hesitate if you are dragging an image and have two folders open, one
with a faded
camera as a background and one with red stripes.


OK I finally discovered how to set the background. You have to go to Edit > Background and Emblems.

Now I was going to context menu of the Desktop and choosing the Change Desktop Background item and then trying to drag a background into nautilus. I already thought it was very lame to do it that way.
At least I learned about a new feature.

I guess renaming Background to Wallpaper for the Desktop Background/Wallpaper could have helped me. See http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135918

Pretty interesting this user interface stuff. It's so easy to confuse people.
