A lot of people use it, even if you apparently don't.
OK, I still do not see the real usefulness of it, but I guess it makes it
more pretty.
It can be used to make open folders easier to distinguish. For
example, you won't
hesitate if you are dragging an image and have two folders open, one
with a faded
camera as a background and one with red stripes.
OK I finally discovered how to set the background. You have to go to
Edit > Background and Emblems.
Now I was going to context menu of the Desktop and choosing the Change
Desktop Background item and then trying to drag a background into
nautilus. I already thought it was very lame to do it that way.
At least I learned about a new feature.
I guess renaming Background to Wallpaper for the Desktop
Background/Wallpaper could have helped me. See

Pretty interesting this user interface stuff. It's so easy to confuse
people.
