How about restricting that to only show vfs urls with actual items in 
them?  If my machine isn't on a network, a smb:// tab is just going to 
take up space.  The same goes for possible future additions like 
cameras:// and printers://.  Simply hide them while the VFS is empty, 
and display them if a device is connected.
