But what about functionality that's not there *yet*? if using a script can be an effective temporary solution, why not going for it?

Just add a few scripts extending functionality (simple, robust, no more than half a dozen) like "Open terminal here", that would be useful per se and a simple way to encourage people writing/looking for new scripts.

Scripts are inherently kind of a hack, writing real code is going to
have a nicer UI and be more robust. The virtue of scripts is that
users can easily write their own.

An user who might write his own scripts won't do that if he isn't shown what scripts can do. An user who might benefit from scripts written by others won't be prompted to look for them on GNOME related sites if he isn't shown what scripts can do.
