I had the same problem ...
I reduced the automounter timeout from 5 to 60 seconds,
which is not a solution for the nautilus behaviour,
but lets you browse your automounted dirs at least for 60 seconds. 

/sbin/automount -t 60 ...

PS: "real" solutions are welcome ;)
