As far as I am concerned the problem is not this, but the fact that
gnome-mime-data has this entry which overrides associations.
In a general case the gimp executable is not missing but gimp-remote is.
As far as I am concerned what a user defines should just show up or a
meaningful error message should show up.
This stuff about gimp-remote does not show up in any of the dialogs, eg
in file types gimp shows up, you only see the problem if you open
/usr/share/application-registry/gnome-vfs.applications
