FWIW, the HIG currently recommends:
Ctrl=Copy, Shift=Move, Shift+Ctrl=Create link, shortcut or alias.
The reason we suggest Shift+Ctrl instead of Alt is because that's the
recommendation in the Motif styleguide, so it's more likely to be
consistent with other non-GNOME apps you might be running on your
desktop.
