How long is it?

Apart from Darins comments, there is also:
directory->details->mime_db_monitor never seem to be set, and it isn't 
unconnected when the directory object dies.

+       command = g_strconcat (FILE_TYPES_CAPPLET_NAME, " '", mime_type, "' '", file_name, "'", NULL);

I think using g_shell_quote() may be safer.
