Creating Desktop Icons when Nautilus is drawing the desktop

Is there a way to create desktop icons when Nautilus is drawing the
desktop?
In KDE there is a menu entry for creating various links such as program
icons, web and ftp site links.
I wondered if there was a way apart from dragging off the main menu.
