The code you'd need to deal with is the icon view, in fm-directory-view.c
and fm-icon-view.c, and the widget it uses, the icon container, in
nautilus-icon-container.c and a bunch of other source files starting with
nautilus-icon-.
This is a challenging feature to implement, and I suggest you try making a
simpler change to nautilus, for example fixing a bug, first.
