[Nautilus-list] Changing desktop font

I am using Nautilus to draw my desktop and would like to change the font
that is used on the desktop.

Using "Preferences/Edit Preferences/Appearance/Default smooth font" does
not work. It only changes the font in the Nautilus browser's left panel.
Can someone give a hint on where to look next? What am I missing?
 
My system consists of RedHat 7.1, Ximian Gnome, and Nautilus 1.0.4.
