Darin,
As I understand it, Xft should work transparently for all text in Gtk widgets, including text in the cavas.
I am currently using the gdkxft library that adds Xft/Render support to Gtk 1.2. If I uncheck the "Use smooth graphics" option in Nautilus, icons will no longer have alpha blending, but fonts will still be anti-aliased thanks to the X server.
