I'm still getting the error. (I'm not sure if you've fixed it yet.)
One other thing I didn't mention before is this: Just near the beginning
of ./configure I got:
ls: .: Permission denied
xml-i18n-toolize: cannot list files in `/usr/local/share/xml-i18n-tools'
configure.in:706: warning: AC_TRY_RUN called without default to allow
cross compiling

cross compiling
After chmod a+rx /usr/local/share/xml-i18n-tools, that error went away
but I'm still having the ./configure: test: argument expected error.
