to be honest, it seems to me that a large portion of the things that
you've suggested as "problems" are things that are installation and
distribution-dependent.  they also assume that the nautilus team has a
little more power to control the gnome project than they
do.  =)  essentially, any good software development project *builds
software* - features, interfaces, etc.  how that software is integrated
into your desktop is something that the packager has to deal with - the
arrangement of menus, choices of network browser from among five choices,
etc.

it might be productive for you to help the gnome documentation and ui
people... this sounds like it really belongs in docs&standards, rather
than directly in the backyard of the nautilus folk.
