Just use gnome-vfs.......then you use its mime database, so the handler would be the same as if you were opening it with nautilus.

Agreed; rest assured, a prototype (er, hack :) like mine isn't going
anywhere near GNOME CVS! There's not (yet, apparently?) a way to set a
default handler for all local files, but in any case launching Nautilus
certainly isn't the best way to make use of its mime info.
