I have tried updating several times. I have deleted the gnome-xml
directory and done a checkout on 
the LIB_XML_1_BRANCH branch. I end up with a ChangeLog which reports a
change to configure.in 
for the release of 1.8.11, but the configure.in file is still for
1.8.10. I presume that is what these lines mean?

LIBXML_MAJOR_VERSION=1
LIBXML_MINOR_VERSION=8
LIBXML_MICRO_VERSION=10
