[Nautilus-list] telling Nautilus not to "cover the desktop"

Yes. There's a preference that controls this. In the "Preferences" menu
(under the "ski symbol" title at the right of the menu bar), there's an item
under "Appearance" that says "Use Nautilus to draw the desktop". If you
uncheck this it will make the change you've requested.
