Hmm, if I am interpreting this description right (don't use Mac) then
the Mozilla FTP view already does this. Can it be "borrowed"?

Everyone (or maybe almost everyone) at Eazel agrees that the Macintosh style
outline list view is the way to go. However, it's a lot of extra work to
implement, and we didn't have time to do it yet. We hope we can get to it
soon, but it definitely won't be in the 1.0 release.
