The issue here is that Frithjof is using Debian, and the mozilla
packages for Debian are not build to NOT require the user to setup their
environment.  I sent the Debian Mozilla package maintainers instructions
on how to do this a long time ago (and a patch which was needed at that
time).

So I say this is a bug with the Debian Mozilla packages.  Please report
that to them.
