Darn. This definitely rings a bell. I remember people who had configuration
problems that reported this symptom (works fine as root, but not as other
users). But my memory isn't good enough, and perusing the list archives and
using Google doesn't turn up the answer.

I do recall that it was some kind of build or configuration problem. Sorry I
can't remember more.
