This hack will probably not make it into Nautilus, because it sounds
like the real cause of the problem is a broken jpeg package on Debian. 
I suppose a debian specific patch for this will be the responsability of
whoever packages Nautilus for Debian.

You just have a stable gnome-vfs that is too old.  These authentication
functions have indeed made it into the stable gnome-vfs branch.
