The Gnome terminal samples the background image in order to generate a
pseudo-transparent background. Couldn't you combine separate X windows
for each icon with anti-aliasing by doing the same thing? Sample the
bit of background behind the icon and blend the anti-aliasing into that.
People who use animated backgrounds (xsnow) will still notice some
weirdness in the local vicinity of the icons, though.
