I think you're right about what the behavior in Outlook should be. I've
noticed the same issue with Outlook Express on the Mac.
However, this is not relevant for Nautilus, because Nautilus does not have
an equivalent to the preview panel of Outlook. Nautilus does show file
contents in its own window, but the file contents take up the whole content
area of the window -- you don't simultaneously see selected icons and file
content in the same window.
Perhaps if you actually *tried* Nautilus ...
