This is not a nautilus bug really. You need to install the pixmaps into the
same prefix as your gnome-libs stuff (it looks for something like
GNOME_DATADIR or something). So install them there and everything works fine
(Makefile's 'shouldn't' install stuff in places outside of the their prefix)
