I just figured out what causes this. It's similar to a problem I had
for the past few days with Evolution, and it's because a while back
GConf renamed its .oafinfo file (Evolution just renamed all of theirs).
If you look in your $PREFIX/share/oaf, you'll probably see gconf.oafinfo
(old one) and gconf-1.oafinfo (current). If you delete gconf.oafinfo,
nautilus should start up for you (it did for me). Just to be safe, I
also removed nautilus*.oafinfo, but it looks like those names haven't
changed.
