Yep it's because libxosd handle the fonts like that.

this is because some characters(glyphs) are not present in the specified
font and that characters are replaced with the defaults one.
have you probe changing the default font ? example :
-*-helvetica-bold-r-*-*-*-320-*-*-*-*-*

you can select with : xfontsel
