This may sound stupid, but have you checked that muine's volume is not
set to 0 - it's independent from your general system volume settings  (I
only suggest this since I spent around 2 hours the other day trying to
debug sound problems only to find out that fedora had helpfully set my
master volume to 0 and I didn't notice because all my volume controls
control PCM, not Master)
