In the past I've contributed directly to GNOME. I've maintained GStreamer, gnome-media and co-maintainer
Totem together with Bastien and provided non-trivial patches to gnome-applets and sound-juicer (and probably
other projects as well).
Nowadays, I'm more involved upstream (FFmpeg) then in GNOME directly, to provide native, optimized free
software video/audio codecs, such that the whole community can benefit from them. This still benefits GNOME
very directly (projects such as GStreamer or Totem would not exist in their current form without FFmpeg), it
is just a little less visible on the surface. I still read various GNOME mailinglists and am proud to be a
foundation member.
