Could you tell me if the error above is a known issue?

Yes, fixed in 1.8.6. However, in order to get it to actually work, you'll need to change the visible columns in the folder comparison (to get the corrupted config re-written).

 

I also tried to install meld 3.1.12 from Ubuntu Trusty backports, here the diff between folders works fine.
In this version (3.1.12) I don't have a location entry, but only a dropdown.
Could you explain, how I can activate the location entry in the version 3.1.12?

There's no location entry. In 3.12 Meld uses the newer GTK+ widgets.
