You really don't need anything special to start helping with Meld;
personally, I use gedit and git and not much else.

There are no project files, or at least none that I know of.

If there's anything particular that you're interested in doing, feel
free to suggest  the idea on the list. It's better and easier to get
feedback now than to do the work and discover that your feature
probably isn't going to get included for some reason.
