This doesn't address to ftp problem queried,
but since mc has already expanded into <inet-fetch>,
imagine the extra power, if NNTP & SMTP could also be handled.
Especially since they have 2 parts: inet ReadWrite & fileManagement.
My extensive use of wily [another 90s killer app] supports the idea.
He proposes hooking a python-based inet-handler onto the existing
wily <superior data-file manager>
Similarly: mc gives us the <superior data-file manager>.
It might be interesting to hack an interface to nc/netcat,
to acheive a <Mail & News client>?
