same but different filesystems

Several weeks I cloned a 2TB HD with a single full HD EXT3 partition to a new
2TB HD. Today with MC I merged subsequent changes on the one in use since
then manually using MC. After I umounted both, I did fsck on both, taking
about 55 minutes on each. The fsck reports show the source and target both
have identical total blocks, but the source is using 4 more blocks in 4 more
files. Over and over I've gone through the directories without finding any
differences. What could explain the differences, and how can I find them?
Should I? Is this partly a journal thing not discoverable via MC?
