using symlinks with hotlist

I have a problem whereby I want to use a symlink to my hotlist, but
because mc backs the hotlist up by moving it and then writes a new one,
this is impossible.  Ie,

@hotlist

becomes:

hotlist
@hotlist.bak

Whenever modified thru the interface. Meaning the hotlist is no longer
using the symlink. 

Is there a way out of this?
