Midnight Commander and PuTTY

I am using PuTTY to login on a SuSE 10.1 server. When I start mc
the line charters are wrong (â) other programs like Yast (also with
lines) work fine). Every thing is ok on the server console. I have it
working on an old Linux server (SuSE 9) but have totally forgotten
what I have to change on the Linux server.
I remember it as a very simple adjustment.
Can someone give me a hint?
