runnning mc after quitting X windows

Hello,
I use Midnight Commander mc-4.6.0-14.9 on RedHat 9.

After quitting X windows and using terminal , I have 2 strange phonomenon
when running mc:
on the left panel there is a reduandant "/" character at the left
at the right panel , the names of the folders are duplicated as I scroll
up/down

any ideas?
