Why does tarfs not work with all archives ?

Nothing happens when I press Enter on the attached archive. It
just creates a random 10240 bytes file in /tmp/mc-root.
The same with a larger archive like
http://www.fredlwm.hpg.com.br/tmp/pervalidus-ide-2.4.20.tar.bz2
Using 4.6.0 from Slackware 9.0. /tmp is tmpfs, but I don't
think it matters since tarfs works with most archives.
