GPM? Mandrake? Bug?

I'm not sure where is the problem, but just in case, I've been collecting information.

Resume: There is a problem with MC and Mandrake 9.0. Even the 4.5.55 MC included with the distribution shows error messages in Linux console which seem related with the gpm libraries. It's not just MC but links shows it too.

We had problems when compiling a new snapshot of MC but they seem to be gone.

The only clue I have is that everything was fine for Mandrake 8.1 which included gpm 1.18.0. In the new manual page it says:

"The server can be configured to match the user's taste,
and any application using the mouse will inherit the server's
attitude. From release 1.02 up to 1.19.2 is was possible
for any user logged on the system console to change the mouse
feeling using the -q option. This is no longer possible
for security reasons."

BTW, there's no problem when running as root.
