Re: GNOME Marketing

Unfortunately I won't be able to join the marketing meeting due to a scheduling conflict, but I’ll stay tuned in to IRC if the conversation moves there.

These mock-ups are preliminary sketches for redesigning GNOME Love pages to make the contribution process a little less daunting for the newcomer.

I hope to make the resources and ‘steps’ to contributing as accessible and legible as possible.

For the GNOME Love home, I’ve placed Ryan McDougall’s Starting your GNOME journey as the introductory guide. It’s currently linked in General Advice, the fifth link on GNOMELove home: https://live.gnome.org/GnomeLove/HowToStart%20En

I think with edited and more comprehensive copy, this guide, with its multiple translations, can provide a better overview of advice/how-to’s for contributing to GNOME than the current first link (Learning Your Way/Project Tour page).

I think moving the GNOME Love Bug Tracker to the home page is also a clear way to suggest it as a great way for newcomers to begin contributing.

The other sketch simply proposes placing a link to the GNOME Love home more prominently on the Get Involved page, as the place to familiarize oneself with how to begin contributing.

I’m not married to any of the designs, but I think it moves in the direction of easing the process of first contributing.

I hope to continue delving further into the GNOME love/volunteer pages and similarly analyze, consolidate, and restructure them to improve volunteer capture.

Any feedback and criticisms are more than welcome!

Hi Sri!

Here are some preliminary mock-ups for Volunteer Capture and make the getting started process a little more straightforward.

One is highlighting GNOME Love on the Get Involved page on the GNOME site to direct people to the wiki and increasing accessibility.
The other is a proposal for moving towards a more graphical interface for the GNOME Love wiki, which makes the page more legible and the proposal itself details some more changes.

Really rough initial drafts, but I would love any feedback.
Surely a lot more to do in terms of streamlining the rest of the wiki, but I'd love to similarly simplify the contribute pages for each department.

And Marina graciously directed me towards Favia's blog from this winter, which has guided me a lot recently.
Could you connect me to her, either via her IRC nick or e-mail? I'd love to chat with her since she knows the project so much better!

Thanks,
Tiffany

Let's expand it and see if we can get some good conference art for GNOME booths?

Are you planning on coming to OSCON by chance?  Where are you located btw?  California I assume?

Hi Sri,

My schedule has been pretty erratic as I've been traveling but I'll see you IRC 4/19 mid-afternoonish (I'm also PST).
I've been thinking about what I can contribute to my application, and the Volunteer Capture project seems a bit nebulous in terms of work to show...so I'm curious about this task (from Art Requests) that I was planning to work on outside of my application anyway: https://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/ArtRequests/flyer-for-conferences

And I'm thinking, if you also find it appropriate/relevant, could I whip up a marketing brochure draft as something to submit with my application?
We can discuss further on IRC tomorrow!

Hi Tiffany,

Let's have a talk about getting soem stuff done.  We have two weeks to put enough work into your application so you can be selected.  So, I'd like to help make your application as strong as possible. I 'm impressed with your style and 'take no prisoners' attitude!

Let's have a chat on IRC?  I'm usually available during the day in pacific standard time in the U.S. (GMT-7 I believe)

I already told Marina that I have you and one other and to close off any more interns. :)

Hi Sri,

Thanks for checking in, and I have not yet applied.
I'm not sure if Marketing application differs, but I was planning to make a more substantial contribution (other than minor wiki edits) before sending in an application.

I'd be happy to go ahead and apply now, unless you suggest otherwise?

Thanks,
Tiffany

Hello Sri,

I'm hoping to apply for the Outreach Program for Women Internship this summer, and I'm currently seeking a mentor for a marketing related project.
Allan suggested I contact you regarding helping out with the annual report activity, and if you have any other projects to suggest I would love to learn more.

Let me know if I can provide any more information and I look forward to hearing from you!

Best,
Tiffany
