Re: Gnome and KDE translation comparison

Hi

1) Gnome has 27742 total strings while KDE has 69886 total strings. That is 2.5 times as many! Does KDE just have that much more software? Can duplication of software (kate, kedit, etc.) at least partially
explain this? Does KDE take something into account that Gnome doesn't?

Both KDE and GNOME projects try to minimize the duplications (except the 3
main editors - kate, kedit and kwrite with KDE, but this has its own reason), and
I personally don't see a huge impact of already-in-CVS duplications.

When I run the command in KDE po CVS,

# find -name "*.po" | grep -v docs | wc -l

I get 680, and even dismissing the kdeextragear, kdenonbeta, others and
www.kde.org files, I get 588. This shows that the number of KDE applications
are far more than GNOME (201), and arguably has more strings in each
corresponding, similar utility or application.

Interesting is that GNOME extras group holds the majority of applications.

2) On average across all 95 languages, Gnome has translated 51.3% of its
strings and KDE has translated 41.1% of its strings.

The statistics related to KDE has not included kdenonbeta, others,
www.kde.org files and kdeextragear until 4 or 5 months ago, when the numbers
showed quite a good progress with each languaage team. Many applications
within KDE still in its infancy state now are included with the statistics.

Some of GNOME translation teams suffer a similar problem with "GNOME
extras".

3) Based on percentage of strings translated, Gnome beats KDE in 56
languages, and KDE beats Gnome at 39 languages.

4) And finally, the languages that can be talking/selling points for
Gnome (defined as either a significant lead or as 100% support when KDE
does not have 100% support):
It's better to treat the desktop environments as complementary items IMHO ;-) Looking out of window, I see other strong issues we need to discuss and focus on
as selling points ;-)

(No, I'm not a KDE fan :-))

Görkem
