There is already a (quite old) feature request about this for GtkSourceView : https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=414394 If it is implemented in GtkSourceView, it will benefit for Gedit, LaTeXila, and all GTK+ text editors and IDEs that uses the GtkSourceView library.
