Embarrassingly late answer, I know, but this message got stuck with
others pending moderation.

At the moment it's not possible. This requires work to migrate to a
higher level socket implementation that supports SSL/TSL transparently.

Bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=593660 might be the one
to follow for this, but I don't know anyone working on this at the
moment.
