First of all, you cannot buy one ticket for the whole trip. You'll
need one ticket for the train part, and a second ticket for the tram
part. And be sure not to get ripped off at Schiphol Airport,
apparently they are happy to sell first class tickets to foreigners.
Make sure you get second class, it shouldn't be too bad! :)

The directions you got are correct, but you can get to your hotel with
one transit less in about the same time:
Take the Fasttrain from Schiphol to Den Haag Centraal. It is easy
enough to walk from there, but you can also take tram 3 (from the top
platform!) towards Leyenbrug (stop 'Spui'). Tram tickets can be
purchased at Den Haag Central Station.
