The patch in the glib bug 710254 was pushed 2013-10-24. Like I thought, 
it solved the icon problem in message dialogs.
The fix in gtk+ (fixing spin buttons) is included in gtk+ 3.10.2 and 3.11.0.
The fix in glib (fixing message dialogs) is included in glib 2.39.0. It 
has been pushed to the glib-2-38 branch, and will almost certainly be 
included in glib 2.38.2 when it's released.
