As has already been suggested, a custom widget may be a better bet.
I've done something similar among my "Gtk Widgets for Instrument
Display" at http://www.bdt-home.demon.co.uk/computer/gtk - perhaps that
might be helpful. It's a bit old-school, though - uses some deprecated
functions.
