I sort of overlooked that you were working with a Gkt::Adjustment.
Maybe getting the parent widget owning the adjustment and then getting
the adjustment from the widget would work better. I'm not sure about
other non-widgets (if there any), but maybe they belong to another
widget (much like Gtk::Adjustment).
